Examining the Moderating Effects of Partner Support on the Relationship between Bereavement and Depression after Induced Abortion and Spontaneous Abortion

Abstract
Induced abortion and spontaneous abortion are life events that can cause trauma and mental health problems. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between bereavement and depression after the abortion, to explore the moderating effects of partner support on those relationship and to suggest practical implications for mental health social work. Data for this study were collected through the use of a survey instrument completed by 206 women who experienced abortion, 20-40 age group. Collected data were analysed by moderated multiple regression. The findings of this study were as follows: First, It showed that induced abortion 53.9%, spontaneous abortion 40.3%, induced and spontaneous abortion 5.8%. The bereavement experiences significantly impacted on more lower depression. Second, the partner support had moderating effect on the relationship between bereavement experiences and depression. Based on these findings, the research discussion reinforced the importance of grief therapy and partner-assisted interpersonal psychotherapy and implications for mental health social work practitioners were discussed.
